Where Are You? Where Are You Going?
Introduction.
Our
lesson this morning is not so much a sermon as it is a meditation. We are going
to offer a series of questions and then look at some Scriptures that help us as
we examine ourselves for the answers. We will make a few comments, but by and
large we will allow the words of Scripture to speak to us.
I.
Where Are You?
A.
In Your Personal Life? (Colossians. 3:1-17). Do you set your mind on heavenly
things, or is your focus on earthly things? Have you “put off” those things in
your life that are not fitting for a Christian? Have you “put on”
characteristics that a Christians should demonstrate?
B.
In Your Family Life? (Col. 3:18-21; Eph. 5:22-6:4). Are you submissive to your
husband? To you nourish and cherish your wife? Are you obedient to your
parents? Are you raising your children in the “training and admonition of the
Lord”?
C.
In Your Social l Life? (1 Thess. 4:9-12; 1 Pet. 3:15-16). Does brotherly love
characterize your life? Are you walking properly toward those who are outside
of Christ? Have you prepared yourself to answer the religious questions that
may come to you?
D.
In Your Spiritual Life? (Romans 12:3-8). Do you recognize the gifts that God
has given you? Do you use these gifts in service to the body of Christ?
E.
In Your Relationship to God? (1 John 1:5-2:2). Is Christ your Advocate? Do you
repent and confess sin whenever it comes into your life, or do you let sin take
hold in your life?
II.
Where Are You Going? Not in terms of geography or your
physical location—what is your spiritual direction?
A.
Do You Have Direction? (Phil. 3:12-14; 2 Tim. 4:6-8). Do you live your life
with a sense of direction. Are you aimed toward the goal of heaven, or are your
thoughts consumed with material things?
B.
Do You Have Control? (2 Peter 1:5-11). Are you shaping who you are, or do you
allow circumstance to determine your behavior and mood?
C.
Are You Growing? (Hebrews 5:12-6:3). Are you maturing in Christ? Are you
remaining a babe spiritually?
D.
Where Will You Be In Ten Years? (Phil. 1:3-6; James 4:13-17). We cannot presume
upon the future, but we should have a confidence regarding our future
commitment to God. This can help us shape who we are going to be.
E.
What Is Your Destination? (Romans 2:5-11). There are two destination we can
reach in eternity. Where are you headed?
Conclusion.
Jesus
offers us the hope of an ultimate destination to which we should all aspire (John
14:2-6).
