In October 2019 six articles ran in Truth Magazine and Gospel Advocate written between Doug Burleson (Associate Professor, Freed-Hardeman University) and Kyle Pope (Evangelist, Olsen Park church of Christ) on the issue of Institutionalism focusing on expediency. This was the first time the subject of Institutionalism had been addressed in Gospel Advocate since the issue divided brethren in the mid-twentieth century. On November 15, 2019, as a follow-up to this written discussion, both men met publicly at the Freed-Hardeman Renaissance Center in Dickson Tennessee to continue the discussion. Brothers Burleson and Pope challenged one another to test the convictions that each of them hold but engaged each other with respect and brotherly kindness.
